Colored denim that expand beyond the borders of different shades of indigo, black, and grey now come in shades of neon brights such as red, yellow, pink, blue, white, and green as clearly indicated at Bread & Butter Barcelona last week, July 4-6 among those attending the show. Generally, Bread & Butter tends to attract some of the top fashion players in denim, urban (which has a different meaning in Europe vs. North America), and streetwear fashion from a variety of European cultures, and this show, which was the largest yet, was no exception.
Many denim brands we talked to mentioned that colored denim was not only going to be a part of the future based on the need for individual style and expression through color, plus the crossover references and influences from music, but that it’s also a respective bow to the past, particularly the late ‘80’s and early ‘90’s. Often those who wore colored denim matched the look with retro Ray-Ban copies in neon pink, blue, red, and green.
We anticipate that colored denim will continue to be a part of new trends coming out of the next two seasons, and while some may consider it old-school, like stove-pipes or skinny denim that has a shelf-life, it is an important statement piece for more progressive fashion players in streetwear culture and will definitely influence other fashion staples (just as sneaker culture has influenced denim) pieces in the near future.
