The first time we’d heard of a sneaker brand collaborating with a car was when the forward-thinking marketing manger of Onitsuka Tiger in Europe showed us their sneaker collaboration that they were doing with the Mini during Bread & Butter Trade Show in Barcelona last July. The sneakers looks like a little Mini and were a must-have for anyone buying up or wanting to buy one of the adorable cars.
This time, JB Classics, the sneaker brand that brings you chrome heeled plates (read also “JB Classics Sneakers Present a Chrome-Plated Design called the Chromeo, plus Announce Collab with Kid Robot + Artist Tilt,” July) called the Chromeo designed by a female designer named “Mdot,” is introducing a 3-way collaboration with DJ Funkmaster Flex and Ford Motors. Only 240 pairs of the LTD JB Classics X Funkmaster Flex Getlo will be on the market feauring the FMF logo in places such as Garage in Switzerland, Quibic in New Zealand, Moe’s Sneaker Spot in NYC, Deep Store in Paris, and Overkill in Berlin.
For the JB Classics X Ford Motors Getlo, only 60 pairs will drop, making it extremely limited and special. The shoe comes with the Ford blue trademark and comes packaged with 2 sets of laces, a certificate of ownership, hand-numbered tongue, and a cinch bag. Like you’d really dare wear these gems.
How did it all come about? 3 years of hard work and connections through Flex who had been working with Ford (i.e., the Ford Flex). Flex, who actually just designed an inline Expedition for the car company, which premiered in New York last Thursday, brought in JB Classics for the triad.
So what’s all this really mean? Collaborations crossing boundaries, i.e. sneaks to cars, cars to musicians, and so on, represent an on-going movement that takes a fresh approach to embed new target markets into old, classic brands. Sneaker culture has been on the forefront of the movement for years now, but others are learning fast about what’s possible from the footwear fanatics.
