Mama Clothing is One of the Few Streetwear Labels for Women on the Market Today—Check-out What They Have to Say About their New Collection, Collabs with New Era, TooFly, Adidas, + the State of the Women’s Streetwear Industry

Mama Clothing, founded and designed by Gabriella Davi-Khorasanee, is one of the few women’s streetwear brands on the market today—even though ironically, there is a growing demand for this type of apparel. What makes Mama unique are many things, including how Gabriella goes about choosing her inspiration and researching her designs before releasing them.

“I started because there was a lack of T-shirts I wanted to wear. I was in my mid-20’s and didn’t want to wear cutesy, cartoon shirts for girls. So I started by creating something I didn’t see in stores,” says Gabriella. That was more than 3 years ago, when she started her first collection under a different name, which from the ashes, later became Mama Clothing.

Today, Mama Clothing, based out of San Francisco, is known for cool T-shirts for women, quilted hoodies, and in this collection, heart motifs in snaps, logos, and patterns, nautical themes, and an entire collection themed Mi Vida Loca. “It’s that whole East LA, cholo-girl vibe that I was interested in for this collection,” explains Gabriella. To do her research, she went to the library and studied the whole 1940’s and 1950’s fashion of LA including the Zoot Suit Riots, and even pulled newspaper clippings that later became a part of her graphic design. Street artist TooFly from New York also collaborated with a designed T-shirt for this collection.

As one of the few women in the street fashion industry, Gabriella has a different perspective of knowing what’s going on in streetwear today. “Women’s street fashion is really interesting because there are other aspects that young women use to create their style. With guys, it’s like a uniform with mostly a T-shirt, sneakers, fitted cap, denim, but girls like to mix-it up with vintage, high-end, heels, plus a streetwear T-shirt and Gucci bag. We have more variety and girls put it together to make it their own.”

New Era has caught onto Mama Clothing, creating one of the first collaborations with a women’s streetwear label, including MA insignia’s and hearts, and also the only New Era fisherman’s hat to go with the nautical themes in Mama Clothing’s recent collection.

The other hot collab that the brand has going on is with Adidas, which was just released in stores last month. Which leads to where Gabriella would like to take things next “More collaborations with shoes! I love shoes, so if anyone wants to work with me, let me know! And of course, we’ll be doing more accessories in the next season with Mama Clothing too.”
