Steven Shein’s jewelry designs of helicopters, hearts, stars, and shapes remind you what it’s like to have fun with wearing accessories. When we came by his booth for a Label Networks TV interview, the Las Vegas Art Museum was just leaving after having been mesmerized by his pieces and placing an order. It seems that Steve Shein, like the pop culture icon Andy Warhol before him, attracts attention from museums and other art/store galleries that missed the meaning of pop culture as art the first time around.
“My background is that I’m actually a sculptor,” explains Steven. “I like working with product design and industrial design and using low-end materials such as plastics, wood, and plexiglass—which is an interesting material.” As Steven explains in the Label Networks TV interview, his start into jewelry design was much bigger, physically, created as part of a performance piece that his instructor suggested that he someday make into a wearable product. That’s when the shrinkage happened to the point where now, he’s created bracelets, necklaces, and pins that are beautiful and interesting and sort of funny “performance pieces” on their own.
“This is how I find my way through things in the present—I just hope to create stuff that people can relate to.” Next up for Steven are housewares and a men’s T-shirt line. Check out one of the most original interviews from the shows last week.
