Stovepipe Denim Summer Trends-America’s Latest Hybrid Styles

Road Reporting + Photos by Laura Frank

Tight, skinny jeans, also known as stovepipes continue to be a popular fixture in American youth culture street fashion. However there are growing subcultures of creative hybrids to stovepipes based on new ways of wearing them, including a unisexual look that can be dolled-up or dressed-down. Stovepipes are often now mixed and matched with key tops, hats, accessories, and footwear inspired from an entire spectrum of rock ‘n roll--from indie to rocker to Supreme-worthy skater-punkers. Overall, young people are getting creative and mashing-up distinct looks to create a style all their own. Very DIY, still.

Key Trends:

Males:

  • Acid-wash markings on stovepipes noting a return to ‘70’s rock
  • Cut-off’s with fringe just below the knee paired with felt or wool hats/fedoras (and sometimes jackets)
  • Black cut-off stovepipes paired with slides—often Vans
  • Stovepipes worn long, paired with graphic T-shirts and skate shoes among skate-inspired indie looks
  • Cut-offs with T-shirts and terry cloth or bandana headbands marking a recontextualized Bjorn Borg look with rock
  • Paired with a shrunken vintage T, plaid ‘70's button-up and beat-up Chucks
  • Stovepipes worn with a rocker look including big hair = recontextualized hair-metal and big-hair rock ala late ‘70’s early ‘80’s
  • Accessories with stovepipes on males often include: headbands or bandanas, metal belt buckles, skate sneakers, slides, or Converse, wrist bands, long or big hair

Females:

  • Stovepipes on girls may often simply be just tight jeans rolled-up with 1-2-inch cuffs, usually just above the knee
  • Often worn with layered tank tops of different colors and textures, including lace as the bottom layer
  • Converse is the footwear of choice with rolled-up denim to achieve a casual, unisex, but particular look—which is then often achieved with key accessories
  • Emo looks with stovepipes including black pants worn with graphic T-shirts or tank tops and headbands
  • Rolled-up or cut-off stovepipes with bandanas rolled in thick, 3-inch widths worn in hair usually with an indie or rock-a-billy hairstyle
  • Rolled-up or cut-offs with bandanas and hoop earrings in a cholo-inspired style, including colorful thick belts, small handheld bags (i.e., red), and Converse shoes
