Crisp, Plaid Long-Shorts Bring Class to Urban Summer Style for Guys

undefined

The re-introduction of a classic, clean look is taking to the streets this summer in plaid long shorts styles for guys. Similar to the original L.L. Bean prep-plaid long shorts of the early ‘80’s, the modern version today is a wider block pattern of plaid, often with a great deal of white showing through, with stripes such as pale blues, reds, greens, and browns. The new version of the classic style also lies with the cut which is longer, usually below the knee, and slightly wider for an almost triangular look from the waist.

The crisp plaid shorts are often paired with equally crisp all-white sneakers and short, white ankle socks (tube socks being completely out), and topped with a white clean T-shirt or single-colored hoodie.

Leaders in the classic shorts movement include Rocawear, Stüssy, FreshJive, Triple 5 Soul, Artful Dodger and G-Unit.

There is some debate as to the origins of the trend, with those saying it harks back to British heritage from classic plaids on the inner linings of coats such as Burberry and Baracuta, or the New England boarding school and Ivy League college classic prep from ’83-’87. Of course there’s a definite influence coming from the mix of upper urbanwear, or even New Dandyism aesthetic that’s being bantered around by those looking for an upscale twist on fashion that once meant fortune and privilege—similar to Fred Perry’s “subculture” campaign with Paul Weller in London at the 100’s Club re-introducing new British music and new-old classic styles turned indie. In an urban sense in America, the new classic plaid long-shorts are also a cross between showing style, wealth, and success—and the fact that you care about looking good.
