Label Exec Damon Dash to Launch Pro-Keds Apparel to Match Kicks + a Social Network—Yet Another Example of the Music-Sneaker-Apparel-Social Network Connection

Damon Dash, the man who co-founded Roc-a-Fella Records with Jay-Z and Kareem “Biggs” Burke, then launched his own enterprise in ’04, Damon Dash Music Group, among other businesses, including a magazine, vodka brand, watch, clothing line (and discovering Kanye West), recently signed a deal with Pro-Keds licensing the brand from Stride Rite to make apparel for men, women, and children.

Dash had the Pro-Keds license for sneaks in ’04 and won the Crystal Show Award for his efforts at revitalizing the 57-year-old former basketball shoe brand. While Dash also has his own apparel line, CEO Collection which is a stab at creating urban couture, the Pro-Keds apparel line is intended for streetwear aficionados to match one’s sneakers—preferably Pro-Keds. It’s also one of the new trends where apparel is made to match the hues of the kicks—rather than the other way around—and yet another new creation from a music-inspired executive rather than a fashion designer.

The Dash Pro-Keds apparel will include 2 lines: a high-end retro line that’s somewhat pricey, and an urban line that’s targeted at a lower price point. Fans can expect the premiere at MAGIC International Fashion Trade Show, February 13-16, 02007 in Las Vegas.

In addition, Dash, along with “Biggs” Burke and Kwame DeCuir are launching their version of an urban, invite-only social online network called BlockSavvy.com where users can live in various blocks of a city and participate in a virtual economy, as well as create their own room with name brands and personal touches.
