While obviously the main draw here at Coachella in Indio, CA, is the music line-up, Global Inheritance’s eco initiatives also rock the festival, especially their human-powered DJ stage.

Global Inheritance, a non-profit organization which continues to create cool eco initiatives with their TRASHed artistic garbage cans, also created an energy generating playground complete with a human-size Hamster Wheel, Tour de Energy Bikes, Energy Swings, and Energy See-Saw, and Turning Handcranks which when utilized, creates energy that is stored into a lithium-ion battery “energy well” that feeds power to DJ equipment.

In a contest called the Energy FACTory DJ Mixer, Global Inheritance solicited tons of incredible music before Coachella by a variety of DJ’s and selected 24 to spin throughout the festival. However the catch is that each DJ needs to also get 21 friends to power their sets on the aforementioned energy equipment.

This interactive campaign is typical of Global Inheritance: Not only have they created hype and opportunity for cool DJ’s interested in performing at Coachella, but they’ve created an interactive, fun art exhibition of energy efficiency. Watching people in a hamster wheel or riding the Tour de Energy Bikes is fairly mesmerizing, but it also makes one think a little differently about energy consumption and creation.

Stay tuned for more from Coachella.
