Quiksilver%uFFFDs Standard Boardshorts collaboration and their retro flare. Kelly Slater once wore boardshorts like this.

Collaborations across non-endemic industries, such as footwear and apparel with hotels are on the rise as more brands (and hotels) continue to push for creative solutions to attract savvy consumers. While we tend to shy away from posting all of the collaborations going on (which is weekly, if you take a look at sneaker culture), here’s another hotel collab with an apparel company that’s pretty interesting, mainly because they’ve also added a Japanese-like twist and are offering the limited-edition products via vending machines.

On July 31 right during the heart of the X Games in downtown Los Angeles, Quiksilver announced their collaboration with The Standard Hotel, the ultimate hipster hotel chain in Los Angeles, Miami, and New York, and a new boardshort for men called the Quiksilver Standard Boardshorts.

The limited-edition collection is interesting because it’s not your high-end technical, neon, long boardshorts like the Hurley Phantom, but rather the Quiksilver Standard Boardshorts are a retro throw-back to the 70’s and 80’s shorter boardshorts and styles of that era. The retro boardshorts reflect the indie humor that most patrons associate with The Standard, or at least in California. The Standard Hotel sign is always shown upside down (how unstandard) and their rooftop pool parties are notorious escapes in the summer. A bit of Hampton’s frivolity in LA.

Polka dots are so in. It%uFFFDs the %uFFFD80%uFFFDs all over again.

To reflect this, the Quiksilver logo on these shorts are also flipped upside down, and are being offered, along with bikinis, via a vending machine, similar to Uniqlo’s T-shirts in Japan available via vending machines and tubes in one of their special campaigns (among others).

Meanwhile, right now the entire Standard Hotel has been taken over by another Quiksilver property, DC Shoes during the X Games. Each night, Fuel TV is filming their show “The Daily Habit” on the roof pool deck with various X Games athletes and celebs.

Come August 8-14, Quiksilver will debut at The Standard along with their boardshorts, shows called “Echo Beach Retrospective 1978-1982: Surf Culture Art Exhibition” which pays tribute to the golden era of surfing which inspired the retro Quiksilver Standard Boardshorts.
